Deck The Halls: Sawtooth School for Visual Art's Annual Fundraiser

Another year has passed by and it is time for the Sawtooth Annual Fundraiser: Deck The Halls. It is a great time when many of the local artists submit their work to be sold for the benefit of the Sawtooth School. I have several large photos along with some smaller ones and greeting cards there this year. So come on out and spend some money on the arts in your community. Deck the Halls runs, December 2 - 21.

Profile

I have a new solo show called 'profile' installed at Camino Bakery, my favorite place to hang out in Winston-Salem. The show is a selection of portraits that I made of people that come into the bakery that I know. Please check them out when you have a chance.

Self-Portarit

Today is the 365th self-portrait that I will take this year. I loved doing them and had a hard time coming up with new ideas for making a picture. I have not decided if I will continue for another year or if I will do something different like 1 every week.

Thank you 2013 for a wonderful year of photography. I hope to have a better year in 2014.

Being heard....

This past Saturday I was able to interview two more people during The Big Feed. A woman who has been in a shelter for two months and a gentleman who was on the streets since 2005.

Their stories remind me that security that we take for granted (a job, home, car) are fragile in the fluctuating world economy.

The Big Feed

The Big Feed is an event that happens monthly on the third Saturday from noon until 2 pm. The event takes place across from the main library on an empty lot. The Big Feed is organized to help the homeless find food and shelter. I was able to talk to two people about their lives and how they have or are turning around.

The Invisibles

I am working on a new photo documentary about the homeless people in Winston Salem. I have seen several members of this population over looked and accused when all they want is to be acknowledged. Photography will continue through October.

The hype

There seems to be some confusion about the press the 5D III is getting right now. The 5D II was and in many ways still is the most revolutionary DSLR to hit the market. So an upgrade to the camera has been anticipated by many for quite some time. And now that it is here it must be talked about and assessed. To see how it is or is not an improvement to the Mach II. I personally would love a 5D II at this point.

Working the race

image

Spring is here and I am back on the road working the bike race season. Tour of California last week this week Quad Cities in Iowa. Working the races alows me to see the country and be outside which I love.

Also working the races give ne a chance to meet new people. Plus puts a decent amount of money in me pocket.

Making movies in Winston Salem NC

Making movies in Winston Salem is a bit difficult. There doesn't seem to be much support for an artist that has little or no money. The Arts Council does not provide support unless you have money. My understanding is that they are supposed to be in the business of supporting artists. Whether  providing assistance financially,  in acquiring space or the means to raise funds.

This has not been the case in Winston Salem. When I went to school in Winston the Arts Council would bend over backwards to help emerging artists to succeed. That does not seem to be the case any longer.

The solution.... leave town to get a project in the can.

A couples interview

I interviewed a couple for the documentary. It was and was not what I expected. How we define manhood is different for each of us based on our experience with society.  It was easier for Dickie to describe the difference in terms of how a man tries to be a woman. Not the definition I was looking for but quite interesting.

Film Festival

So I went to the After Dark Film Festival at Studio 35 last night. 10 Horror films by women. It was a good time. The variety was from serious horror in the genera to comedy with dolls. But all well done. The films presented were all from Cali so it would be nice to see work made on the east coast and the Ohio area. Maybe next year.
